Ricky Wheeler
Captain
Ricky grew up fishing in our back yard. Really. He spent his time on the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and Chesapeake Bay targeting striped bass, weakfish, flounder and bluefish. He was even known to ride in a small aluminum duck hunting boat in search of white perch and spot. Then he got a dock job at South Jersey Marine in Wildwood, caught his first white marlin (shout out to Don Gentilini of Super Crew and Jeff Thiel), and the rest was bluewater history.
After college, Ricky mated on Super Crew (54′ Monterey) and Exile (45′ Hatteras). His work with Exile took him to Venezuela and Aruba in 2010. Since, he’s been freelancing, frequently Captaining for multi-record holder (as in over 13 IGFA world records) Maureen Klause. He’s a regular the waters off Bahamas, Grenada, and Costa Rica, not to mention a local in the Canyons along the New Jersey coast.
Ricky has his own lure company (www.fishdownsea.com, launched in 2015) and is a frequent contributor to On the Water Magazine. He recently took 1st in the Spice Islands Billfish Tournament.
