    • I had the pleasure - well let me be real here - a lifelong wish fulfilled this week when I was able to take one of my old school WWE wrestling idols, Jake the Snake Roberts, out to catch his first striped bass.Being that it’s late July in Jersey, you would think there would be an issue trying to find stripers in mid 70 degree waters, and you’d be right. But Captain Dave DeGennaro of the Hi-Flier www.hiflier.com had the bass dialed in at the Barnegat Light inlet. The key to success was to match the hatch and time the tide when they spark to feed. As 3 to 4 inch sand eels have been present in the area, Captain Dave had us casting 1-ounce Kalin’s leadheads tipped with Storm Searchbaits and Zoom rubber baits in clear silver fleck colors.DeGennaro’s method was to carefully position the boat just outside the swashing currents and tidal flow that push over the submerged jetty rocks while we all launched lures into the whitewater rips, allowing the lures to sink 10 to 15 feet down and retrieve at a moderate pace. For weaponry, we used a medium power 6-1/2 foot spinning rod matched with a Shimano 3000 Stradic reel spooled with 20-pound Power Pro braid, a 50-pound Spro barrel swivel, 30-inch section of 20-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader and the lure tied via loop knot.As terns and gulls were dipping and diving into the churning whitewater, The Snake and I made plenty of casts that got short bit by 3 to 5 pound blues when Jake finally wrestled in a solid 26-inch striper that put up a strong fight on light tackle. Even though water temps were not bass-friendly, the confluence of swirling currents and presence of bait in the area combined for the right recipe to get any resident stripers feeding with ferocity. As we bailed bass and blues during an afternoon tide, Jake put the finishing moves on some fluke inside Barnegat Bay to round out the day. Well done Snake![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5572,5573'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • In the past decade, Jersey’s wrecks and reefs have begun to colonize with summer visitors in the form of gray triggerfish.Previously known as a relative bycatch on the structure piles, triggers are now carpeting inshore wrecks and reefs, sometimes by the hundreds. For those that don’t know, triggerfish contain a sweet white, flaky meat and offer up quite a spirited tussle for recreational anglers. The key to effectively catching triggers is to design your rigs to get around that sharp beak for a solid hookset. You want to hit quickly on triggers, as they are adept at clipping baits off the hook with ease. Generally speaking, when fishing Jersey structure piles, start with a 75-pound Spro Barrel swivel, then using 30-pound TripleFish monofilament leader, tie a hi-lo rig with 3-inch droppers roughly 18 inches apart and with a double overhand knot, loop on a bank sinker anywhere from size 4 to 8 ounces if fishing the ocean, 1 to 2 ounces when fishing off piers. The real key to success is in the hook size. Scale down small and use hooks anywhere from size 1/0 to size #4, depending on the size of the triggers below. When baiting, leave the big gobs of stuff at home and utilize tiny bits of bait that triggers can nip and swallow in one peck, such as squid tentacles, half inch squares of cut squid, tiny bits of clam or even Fishbites. While nearshore wrecks and reefs in about 25 to 60 feet of water hold plenty of triggers, do not overlook local piers and inlet areas for triggers as they will stick to the rocks, jacks and pilings throughout the summer months. A medium power moderate to fast action conventional rod and reel set up is sufficient such as a Lamiglas 7040CT matched with a Shimano Torium 20 reel spooled with 50-pound Power Pro braided line. Simply drop your rig to the bottom and wait for the quick tap-tap-tap pecks of the triggers, setting the hook immediately. If you swing and miss, simply put it back down as they are aggressive strikers and will come back to hit immediately.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5558,5559'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • I literally have squid strips stuck to my backpack and Gulp! Juice stains on my shirt as I write this, reason being I just stepped off the deck of the 90 foot party boat Gambler in Point Pleasant www.gamblerfishing.net from a half day fluke trip.A beauty 7.5-pound flatback took the pool and plenty of others were hoisted over the rails. Party boat fluke fishing is an absolute staple in summer shore fishing as it offers easy and quick access to the fluke grounds for an affordable nominal fee.Trips usually run twice a day from 8 AM to 12:30 PM and 2 PM to 6:30 PM and party boat fleets can be found from Raritan Bay down through Delaware Bay so the Jersey scene is covered from tip to tip, and nearly every other fluke-friendly state will also have the summer fleet targeting fluke. To make a party boat fluke trip successful and comfortable, certain gear must be brought. A standard conventional rod such as a Lamiglas BL7020 matched with a Shimano Torium 20 reel and spooled with 30 to 50-pound Power Pro is a preferred gun to bring to the battle.Terminal tackle to battle any normal fluke conditions include 75-pound Spro Barrel Swivels, #2 Spro three way swivels, braid friendly fishfinder slides, 30-pound Yo-Zuri Fluorocarbon leader, size 2/0 to 3/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hooks, pre-packaged fluke rigs and 5 to 10-ounce bank sinkers. Other basic necessities on the boat to perform duties include a solid 9-inch Dexter Russel fillet knife, Mustad pliers, Plano 3600 boxes, Shimano Blackmoon bag organizer, Costa 580 lens sunglasses and a Cuda measuring tape.Bait is usually provided by the boat in the form of spearing and squid strips, but any fluke belly, bluefish strips, or sea robin strips you can procure are prime time baits to lance on the hook. And of course the kicker baits – Gulp! 4-inch Swimmin’ Minnows or 4-inch New Penny shrimp. When drifting, keep baits on bottom and dish out line if you aren’t holding. Drifts can be slick and fast and if your bait is up in the water column you’ll only attract dogfish. Mates on party boats will perform all the dirty functions like untangling lines, netting fish and running to get bait for you, so be sure to always tip them at least 20% of the cost of the fare. Summer fun on the high seas is here, try out a party boat fluke trip![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5542,5543'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
