    • Along Florida’s sleepy “Nature Coast”, the port of Crystal River offers easy access to red snapper and grouper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. On a recent trip, I hopped on board with Captain TJ Shea of 2Shea charters http://fishanddivetampa.com/captain-shea/ and after running 40 miles, we were in an incredibly shallow 50 feet of water to set a drift over an old shrimp boat wreck. Using a 7-foot Okuma Azores AZ-S-701M matched with a Okuma Azore Z-80S spinning reel spooled up with 50-pound blue Yo-Zuri SuperBraid, we started off snapping 2-ounce Spro bucktails around the wreck. What followed was a clinic in catch and release red snapper fishing as hits came fast and furious, pulling on snapper that breached the 10-pound mark. Bucktails are worked with quick fast short jerks of the rod to get the snapper’s attention and incite an aggression strike.Shea suggested we switch up to target gag grouper so we broke out the 6-foot Okuma Cedros CJ-C-601Ma conventional rods set with Okuma Cortez A series reels and attached a “knocker rig” consisting of a 2-ounce egg sinker slid on the 50-pound fluorocarbon leader then a size 6/0 Octopus Mustad circle hook. Cut baits of Spanish sardines were lanced on the hook and drifted over the rockpiles and around the wreck. In an instant gag grouper to 15 pounds were being release over the gunnels.Gags were hooked best when taking the bait, the spool is freelined back to them for a solid three count before engaging the reel and reeling up at a moderate pace to set the circle hook. Florida gulf wreck fishing can be a non stop affair as all the wreck beasties are super aggressive and charged up to hit bucktails, jigs, metal lures as well as both live and dead baits. Spicing up the mix are a bunch of Amberjacks, hogfish, triggerfish, cobia, and a ton of sharks to keep the groove going. Just be sure to check the Florida Fish and Wildlife regs ahead of time as both snapper and grouper are highly regulated in the state.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5278,5276'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • I cruised by the Saltwater Fishing Expo in New Jersey this past weekend and was stoked to see some old familiar fishing industry faces, and that’s where I ran into Ryan White of Hatteras Jack in Rodanthe, NC.White is the owner of the North Carolina based Century rods and as we got to jabbering, he told me that the Outer Banks was giving up some solid surf red drum fishing right now. “Redfish use the currents to push bait around on the edges of riptides in the cuts and sloughs of the shoals,” said White. “They’re really feeding on the pogy right now, it’s a good time to catch fish in the 15 to 30-pound range.”White’s go-to method is to toss out a fishfinder slide chunk rig consisting of a braid-friendly sinker slide clip with 4 to 8-ounce Hatteras sinker, a short 8-inch 60 to 80-lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, to which a size 8/0 to 10/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook is snelled on. A nice, thick pogy aka bunker chunk is cut and lanced onto the hook through the backbone. Heavy gear is desirable when chunking in the swashing waters outside the breaking surf and around inlets. If you are adept at throwing a heavy duty baitcasting set up, go with a Hatteras designed 12’ 6” Century Slingshot SS1506C matched with an Abu Garcia CS Pro Rocket conventional reel, spooled up with 50-pound Spiderwire and either tie direct to the rig or Albright knot a 10 foot top shock leader of 50-pound Triple Fish monofilament before you tie the rig on. The mono shock allows for easier casting. If using a spinning set up, go with a 12 foot Shimano Tiralejo TRS120MHA matched with a Shimano Ultegra 14000 reel.Red drum feed similarly to striped bass as they cruise the sloughs and cuts looking to suck down any remnants of fresh pogy, clams, crabs and other forage that gets churned up in the roiling surf. Let the drum take the bait, give it a three count then set the hook.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5269,5268'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Striped bass season reopened in Jersey’s backwaters on March 1st, and its been a bananas bite since the first minute. Don’t get hyped to catch any slobs though, as 95% of the fish are schoolie size of 18 to 26 inches long, but right now its about quantity over quality.By far, the easiest way to score first of the year stripers is by bloodworming. Start by going with medium-light tackle rods like a 7-foot Shimano Teramar TMSE70M matched with a Quantum Iron 30 reel, spooled with 20 to 30-pound Power Pro braided line. For rigs, scale down from a regular striper type rig with large hooks and grab a pre-packaged Fin Strike/Aqua Clear Hi-Lo Kingfish/Spot pill float rig equipped with size #2 Mustad Baitholder or Pacific Bass hooks and a 2-ounce bank sinker for weight. The pill floats allow the bloodworms to float just off the bottom a bit as the stripers patrol the mud flats to suck them down as if they just popped out of the muddy bottom. Rig a half bloodworm threaded onto the hook shank, leaving a good inch or two to dangle off the bend. When tides are ripping, a fishfinder slide rig will lay the bloodworm out better in the current, consisting of a braid-friendly slide sinker clip, a 75-pound Spro Barrel Swivel, 24-inch section of 25-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon Leader and a size 2/0 Gamakatsu Baitholder hook on the end.Hot spots for early season stripers are anywhere you can find water temps that are above 48 degrees. Annual Jersey producers are back bay areas as well as river systems such as at Graveling Point in Great Bay, Toms River, Absecon Creek and the Great Egg River. If the bite is fast and furious, hold the pole in your hand to set the hook, otherwise put it down in a rod spike and watch it closely as the scrappy stripers have the ability to pull the rod into the water if you turn a blind eye. I hit a night trip this week with five other friends while the low pressure dropped right before the Nor’Easter and a 5 hour session had us tallying up 109 stripers, and we left them biting. Don’t wait! The bass are already here, grab some bloods and hit it during the dark hours.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5207,5208'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

            • Jersey’s winter flounder season just opened on March 1st, and if its anything like last spring, we could be in for a heck of a spring fishery. Flounder poundin is a light tackle affair, but you can up your odds to catch more fish by adjusting your tactics a bit to get them chomping.Regarding rigs, a yellow bead above the shank or a small ¾-inch yellow rubber grub above a Mustad size #6 Chestertown or Size #8 Mustad Long Shank Beak hook, lanced on before the bait, creates enough color and attraction to convince a flatback to eat. Fin Strike makes some solid pre-packaged flounder rigs with the yellow corn beads already lanced on. Yellow seems to be a predominant color flounder gravitate to, and some anglers even go so far as to paint their 1 to 2-once bank or coin shaped sinkers yellow to attract fish when bouncing them up and down in the mud.Stirring up the bay bottom gets fish on the feed. A plunger fixed to a long dowel can be plunged over the side to stir up the mud bottom, releasing worms, clams and forage that runs with the tide to attract flounder to your baits. Another way to create a slick is to utilize the engine props. For some reason, every time the boat’s engines start, the flounder start hitting. When the props begin to turn it churns up the shallow water, but could also be the vibration that gets them eating. Try starting and stopping your engine every now and then and see if it sparks a bite.By far, one of the top secret tricks is the “Ol’ Boy’s” secret. On your chumpot, always have one 12 inch snelled hook tied directly to the bottom square in the chum pot metal, and make sure it rests on the bottom. Tie another hook on a long 36 inch leader two inches above the other hook and bait up with bits of mussel, clam or worm. More times than I can count, I’ll be pulling a flounder or two up with the hooks on the chum pot as the flatfish come right up to the chumpot feeding like they are cows in a trough. Winter flounder poundin should be firing on all cylinders by the end of the month, put these tricks to the test and fill your limit quickly.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='5191,5192'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
