    • As blackfish (Tautog) make their move back inshore, they will be staging on backwater pier stanchions and around dock pilings.Pier fishing is a walk on affair which requires no corkers or heavy duty gear to navigate the flat, concrete surface, making it easily accessible to land the formidable tog. You don’t need the truly heavy gear that you would use togging out on the shipwrecks, but still need something with enough backbone to winch up a battling blackfish.A 7-foot Fin-Nor Tidal series rod matched with a Shimano Torium 16, spooled with 50-pound Power Pro braided line does the trick for me. Rigs are simple. Many pier pounders employ a fishfinder slide rig when togging, consisting of a 2 to 3-ounce egg sinker lanced on the braided running line, a small orange bead, 150-pound Spro barrel swivel, then a short 20-inch length 40-to 50 pound Trikfish leader with a size 3/0 Gamakatsu or Mustad Baitholder hook on the end. Another typical pier toggin’ rig is the simple dropper loop set up with a 3 to 5-ounce bank sinker on an overhand loop, then a snelled size #4 Virginia style hook looped on about 5 inches up from the sinker. For maximum results on the pier, it is best to fish an hour before or after the slack tides, when current doesn’t run too fast. If the bait is flailing around, blackfish won’t be able to grab it. Pier pilings usually have plenty of mussel growth on them which attracts tog to feed in a big way. Drop the rig straight down and wait for a bite. Early fall baits include fresh pieces of clam, green crabs, and if you can get ‘em, Asian crabs, as they are the most natural bait found around the pier and inlet areas. Other helpful items when pier blackfishing include a sharp pair of Cuda scissors, Calcutta needlenose pliers, and a simple bait rag to keep your hands clean and dry.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1506433392109-f186ecec233bda7d7aacc850f710d17f-5' include='4771,4770'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • As I write this, its blowing 35 knots northeast in New Jersey, rain spitting nearly sideways, and yet, somehow I was out fishing the local bridges for blackfish today. The bite was solid, and I’ll get to that in a future column, but more importantly, I realized that if I didn’t have the proper gear on this morning, I would have been miserable. With crappy weather sitting on us from Hurricane Jose for the next few days, if you’re going to get out, dress properly. Starting from the top, get yourself some quality, water repellent shells complete with hoodie.Grundens gear has always been a standard for battling foul weather and recently, they’ve really entered the lighter apparel market to accommodate all types of saltwater anglers. Grundens Gear Weather Watch hooded jacket and Weather Watch Pant, both of which are easily foldable and packable to fit in your backpack or even a large pocket. StormR makes a heavier duty Aero Jacket for even gnarlier weather conditions that will repel any wetness thrown your way. On deck, always be wearing the tried and true Grunden’s Bibs, those things are nearly bulletproof and will keep you dry and clean.Columbia Terminal Tackle PFG hoodies are lightweight and dry ultra quick so if you do get wet, it’s not for long. Pair that up with the Columbia Storm Jacket if the rain is drenching. Call me a homer, but I was wearing a simple Tackle Direct ball cap today and that kept the rain off of my head and out of my face most of the morning. For footwear, I never leave home without my Xtra-Tuf boots, either wearing the Ankle Cut booties during warmer climes, or the Neoprene Deck Boot when on deck or when the air temps drop below 60 degrees. A fantastic bite out fishing can quickly turn into a miserable, shivering test of willpower if you get caught in a squall or two and are not properly outfitted with apparel. Dress smart, and your day will be that much more enjoyable![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1505837322140-948ff075eca6866355b52a127bf654fe-2' include='4759,4750'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • They’re here. False albacore aka little tunny, Fat Alberts, (bonita for the Florida folks) whatever you want to call them, the speed demons are inundating the Northeast waters from Rhode Island to New Jersey.Albie fishing is fast a furious and you have to be prepared to chase the schools wherever and whenever they pop up. Schools of albies will always be on the move, whether you target them from the beach or via boat. Sunup hours until around 9 AM and evening hours until dusk are best times to find fish rainbowing out of the water crashing on baitfish which can include spearing rainfish, and peanut bunker. When finding a school, motor up ahead of them and try to predict and intercept their path, shutting the engines off and drifting into them. Fat Alberts have superior eyesight, and when casting to them, avoid any terminal tackle such as swivels, snaps, etc. From the main running line, tie a 26 to 34-inch 14-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader via a uni-to-uni knot connection and connect the lure directly to the end of the line using an improved clinch knot for metals, and a Homer Rhodes Loop knot for bucktails and plastics.Thin profile metals such as #2 Deadly Dicks and tailless Ava 007’s mimic slender baits such as spearing and rainfish, but ½ to 1 ounce Crippled Herrings and Kastmasters resemble the wider profile of peanut bunker to a T. Bucktails should be in the ½ ounce to 1-ounce size, in white or chartreuse, and be tipped with a 4-inch size split-tail Fin-S fish, Bass Assassin, Berkeley Gulp Swimmin Minnow. Metals are cast out and worked back as fast as you can reel. Bucktails can be cast and bumped back and twitched in spurts, to allow the action flutter and entice.A lighter 6-1/2 to 7-foot spinning rod such as a Shimano Terramar, Shimano Sustain 4000 reel spooled with 15-pound Silver Thread monofilament is the best for minimal disturbance in the water. Stray away from using braided lines if you can as albies will key in on it and be wary. A fight with a false albacore is nothing short of intense with drag-ripping runs. Get ready for some fun![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1505310038855-65229b9a15487c2586fd5a01b48e4483-5' include='4740,4739'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Finally, September is here! In Jersey, we’ve got the beaches back, and sights of colorful umbrellas and scents of sun tan lotion are replaced with the constant hum of diesel truck engines running the sands and the smells of stripers and bluefish wafting from the surf. The cool nights are going to spark mullet in the backwaters to move on out and hug the coastline from north to south, and with them will be the first signs of big bluefish and striped bass. Mullet in the northeast are generally “finger mullet” meaning they are only about 4 to 7 inches in length, unlike their southern brethren which can grow to a few pounds. Many swimming plugs can be cast to mimic the profile of finger mullet at this time of year. The Bomber A-Salt, Mambo Minnow, Rapala Sub Walk, and Daiwa SP Minnow are all offerings I’ve had great success with. Follow the dark patches of mullet as they hug the beach and cast the plugs around the edges of the schools. If bass and blues are feeding aggressively, you can switch up to a popper like a Creek Chub Knucklehead or Yo-Zuri Bull Popper to get the reaction strike.Or if bait fishing is your game, the tried and true Fireball mullet float rig will always work wonders to attract roving packs of slammer bluefish. Simply slide out the double hook on the end of the rig and thread on a whole mullet, then replace the hook onto the rig and cast out with a size 2 to 4-ounce Pyramid sinker. If you are proficient with a cast net, you can throw on the mullet in the undertow, gathering prime live baits, and send them back out on a fishfinder slide type rig, with a 75-pound barrel swivel, 24-inch section of 40-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader and size 5/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hooking the mullet through the lips, sending it out to flail behind the mullet school where bigger bass are working clean up duty.Mullet run rods can generally be 8 to 10 foot surf sticks rated 20 to 40-pound medium to fast action such as a Tica TC2 or Lamiglas Insane LIS 10MS. For reels, if bait fishing, match up the rods with a Penn 5500 Slammer III, if casting plugs, go with a smooth drag Shimano Stradic 5000 or Okuma Avenger A65. Spool up with 30 to 50-pound braided Power Pro line and tie your rig directly to the braided line.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1504714019129-084f978ebb4d1ccddc00781fe3e852d0-9' include='4718,4715'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
