    • Some fish dole out crushing hits, put up a pretty solid fight and may even give you some head-thrashing shakes. And then there are jack crevalles.Every time I fish Florida’s east coast off of Cape Canaveral, Pt. St. Lucie and Sebastian Inlet area waters I am reminded of the knee-buckling, explosive topwater strikes jacks dish out. They absolutely punish poppers. You need heavier gear to hang on tight to a 20 to 30-pound jack, and a good rule to remember is you don’t beat a jack, you just have to last him out.Poppers should be of heavy-duty construction that can take a true beating. Offerings that can withstand the punishment jacks put out include the Yo-Zuri Bull Popper, Williamson Popper Pro, and Creek Chub Knucklehead. You’ll see jacks corralling bait schools like sardines, mullet or menhaden up against the bulkheads in the bays, or in open schools outside inlets along the coastline. Cast poppers on the outskirts of bait schools to pull jacks from underneath out to hit the supposedly fleeing baitfish lost from the rest of the pack. Many times you will simply see schools of jacks out in the open water finning around looking for a fight, but they may just be milling around. A popper ripped across the surface can flip the switch to get the jacks going aggro. When a jack blows up on the popper immediately rear back and set the hook, but be sure to have your drag system a notch or two over halfway, so as not to be too tight where a rushing jack can snap the line but with enough resistance to gain ground on the fish and tire him out after he makes myriad screaming runs.Sticks should be medium/heavy 7-foot spinners such as a Penn Carnage CARJGII 3080S66 or Shimano Talavera TES66MHB matched with spinning reels able to hold enough line and with sturdy drag systems that can handle the burn from a big jack. Go with a Penn Spinfisher 6500 or Van Staal VM275 spooled with 50-pound Power Pro, 60 to 80-pound Seaguar or Yo-Zuri TopKnot fluorocarbon Leader tied to a Tactical Angler TA 125-pound Power clip.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1501509815415-34cbd741324397136f21e7362c23b40f-7' include='4635,4636'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • Right now in New Jersey, there is a viable night fishery for bottomfish on the wrecks and reefs that include the likes of ling, cod, porgies, sea bass and even squid.Under the guise of darkness, bottom beasties lurk along the sea floor. Many party boats are making nightly runs to the 3 to 12 mile wrecks to pull on a cooler full of species. I hopped a trip on the Gambler on Thursday and the boat had a few hundred ling come over the rails with red hake up to 3 pounds.Set ups for bottom bouncing can be relatively simple in nature, with a 7-foot medium action rod rated for 20 to 40-pound such as a Lamiglas BL7040C, matched with a conventional reel such as a Shimano Torium 16 class reel. Spool up with 50-pound Power Pro braided line, then Albright knot a 10 foot section of 40-pound TrikFish monofilament leader where the tag end is simply tied into a double overhand knot.Loop an appropriate weight bank sinker from 6 to 12 ounces on the loop. About 3 inches up from the weight, pinch the line and loop on a snelled size 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook, cinched on with a lark’s head knot for ling and black sea bass. You can also opt to tie a dropper loop 24 inches above the bottom hook and lance on a size 5/0 Gamakatsu or Owner Baitholder hook to target larger species like cod that patrol a little off the ocean floor.Proper baits on the bottom hook include small 1-inch pieces of fresh clam, squid strips, bergall strips or Berkeley Gulp! 3-inch Swimmin’ Minnows in white or chartreuse. The top hook can be baited with a big piece of clam tongue or a 6-inch Berkley Gulp! • Heading into the crux of summer flatfish fun, fluke are now situating in the mid range depths of 35 to 75 feet. The largest of flatties will be hanging around structure piles as various wrecks, reefs and rocks provide cover for fluke to lay low and ambush baitfish as they swim by.Structure fishing by snapping bucktails means a more detailed oriented approach is necessary to prevent hang ups. To start, you may think you want to go heavier, but that’s not the case. Rods should be rated 15 to 25-pound, 7-foot moderate to fast action such as a Shimano Teramar or St. Croix 7 foot TISMH70, matched with a spinning reel to hold enough line as a Shimano Stradic 5000 or Okuma Cedros CJ40. Spool up with lighter 30-pound Power Pro or Sufix 832 green braided line as the thin diameter can cut through the water column and get you down to the bottom quickly. Bucktailing reigns supreme around Oceanside structure piles as you can keep the weighted hook up and off and around bouncing through the sticky stuff where a normally dragged offering will hang up on drifts. The standard bucktail rig consists of a 36-inch section of 25 to 30-pound Yo-Zuri Topknot or Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, with a 80-pound Spro barrel swivel at the top end, then 16 inches down a dropper loop tied then another 20 inches down from there a lighter 1 to 2-ounce Spro bucktail in white, white/chartreuse or white/yellow tired via loop knot. On the dropper, fix an even lighter 1/8-ounce bucktail to be freely flailing on the loop when bouncing the bottom with the heavier buck. The light bucktail is easily utilized even in the heaviest of currents as boat anglers on a drift can cast upcurrent and let the bucktail swing around until it becomes tight at around 12 o clock then, can be bounced effectively until about a 3 o clock hand until it should be reeled in and cast out again upcurrent. Tip the bucktail with a longish 4 to 7-inch bluefish strip, fluke belly or squid strip and lightly hop the bucktail in, around and over the structure, where you will inevitably find a doormat flattie hiding in waiting to pounce on the offering.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4518,4517'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

            • Florida’s east and west coasts have a bad ass fishery when it comes to chasing down the brown clowns, or cobia.Hardcore battlers and inquisitive by nature, cobia are suckers for whacking topwater and subsurface lures. Usually, you can happen upon a pack of 2 to 5 fish or so hanging around on the water surface as their shadows appear like sharks, but more commonly you will also find them milling around structure like buoys or following manta rays and sea turtles.A more brawny set up is recommended when tangling with cobia, as medium- to heavy-action 7-foot conventional rods for live-baiting like a Okuma Azores AZ-C-661MH, spinning rods for sight-casting such as a Shimano Tallus TLS69MHBBL. Match rods with a Shimano Talica 12 or Penn 6500 SS. Spool up with 30 to 50-pound Power Pro or Sufix 832 line, with a 6-foot top shot of 40 to 50-pound Seaguar or Yo-Zuri TopKnot fluorocarbon leader tied via Albright knot. For lure selection, choose lures that make a lot of commotion and have seductive fluttering capability. Bucktails like 2- to 3-ounce Spro or Williamson Lures Banjo Eye in pink or chartreuse can be tipped with pink or white Hogy 7-inch plastics or even a live eel. Bucktails can be cast ahead of the cobia to sink down about 5 feet or so then drifted back into its forward path, jigged in long sweeping motions to garner a strike. When spying cobia hanging off of manta rays or other structures, try tossing some topwaters to pull them off the object and get them hot to bite. Plugs like the Rapala X-Rap Walk, Yo-Zuri Hydro popper, or Williamson Popper Pro all can push water spray around to mimic a fleeing baitfish.Once you hook up to a cobe, be prepared for a knock-down drag-out battle that lasts both outside, boatside and inside the boat. Be wary of their strength when trying to unhook, gaff or net them as they can really put a bruising on you if you are not vigilant.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4492,4491'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
