LIGHT BUCKTAILING BACK BAY FLUKE

    • Early summer back baywaters are hot spots for fluke, and light bucktails work wonders to trick them up. General makes and models include Andrus, S&S or MagicTail bucktails in 3/8 to 1/2 ounces, with most productive colors being white, chartreuse, white and yellow.Standard roundhead style bucktails work best when tides are at slack or within 2 hours each side of the high tides, but if tide start ripping, switch up to an arrowhead or lima bean style to cut through the water drag better.Tying a bucktail dropper rig is simple. Start with a 50-pound Spro barrel swivel and a 30-inch section of 25 to 30-pound Seaguar or Yo-Zuri TopKnot fluorocarbon. About 16 inches down from the barrel swivel, tie in a simple dropper loop and affix a 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook or bucktail hair teaser, as the free-fluttering action of the teaser elicit aggressive strikes. On the tag end goes the bucktail, tied via loop knot to allow for a free-swinging flutter. Procure and tip bucktails with strip baits such as fresh, early season mackerel or bluefish, hickory shad, or other natural offerings like squid and spearing. For artificial attractants, lance on a Berkeley Gulp! 3-inch Swimming Mullet or Shrimp to the bucktail hook or dropper teaser.Target flats as shallow as 4 feet but also on the channel edges generally in the 5 to 20 foot depths. Find areas with slow flow, about an hour around the high or low slacks, and avoid the ripping mid tide hours. Successful light bucktailing in shallow backwaters is heavily dependent upon minimal tidal flow. To work effectively, bucktails should be presented with an up and down vertical approach, and minimize your angle as much as possible. Though you can get away with a 30 to 45 degree angle if the current starts ripping, anything past that angle will virtually alter the action of the bucktail, and you will simply be dragging it horizontally, and that isn’t an optimal presentation.Light tackle set ups to properly work bucktails include a 6-1/2 to 7 foot medium to fast action spinning rod such as a St. Croix TIS70MLF or Shimano Terramar TMSE66M matched with a 3000 to 4000 class Shimano Sustain reel, and spool up with 12 to 20-pound Power Pro braided line.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4325,4324'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • Bluefin tuna have been crushing anglers’ lines in the 20 to 50 mile range off the Jersey Coast and as we move into July, the bite should only get hotter.General spots like the Glory Hole, Chicken Canyon and Triple Wrecks with water depths from 150 to 250 feet have held tuna in the 50 to 200-pound class, with one of approximately 435 pounds boated two weeks ago. While a chunk bite is preferred down south, the central and northern Bluefin seem to like trolled and jigged offerings. As you mark fish and/or find that right temperature break, start dropping back Mold Craft squid Daisy Chains and Squid Nation Spreader Bars. Drag them at a 5 to 7 knot pace. Other lures in the spread should include Williamson Big Game Catcher and Tuna Catcher lures in purple/pink, zucchini and mackerel color patterns. Also drop back some Joe Shute or Ilander skirts in blue/white covered over a whole medium to horse ballyhoo, dropped way, way, way back 600 feet, or attach them down on a #32 planer and set them 300 feet back. Some anglers will rig long 10 to 12 inch Hogy or RonZ soft baits in place of ballyhoo and troll them in the same fashion. The tried and true cedar plug put in the prop wash will always garner strikes from short biting tuna. When fish are marked below, start dropping jigs on their heads. For metals, Williamson Benthos 3-1/2 to 7 ounce jigs and Shimano Butterfly jigs work well. For soft baits on leadheads, utilize the Hogy Harness jig or RonZ 4x jigs. When trolling, heavy duty set ups are mandatory as there’s always a chance at getting schooled by a 400-pound plus fish. Stand up 50 to 100-pound class rods like the Penn Tuna Stick TS5010ARA56 or Shimano Tallus TLCSTH2SSBLA matched with Penn International 50VSW or Shimano Tiagra TI50WA 50 wide reels are proper guns to bring to the fight. Spool up with 80-pound Quattro or Hi-Seas line and implement a 300 to 500-pound Sampo Coastlock BX8CZ snap to lock on the trolled offerings. Bluefin offer the small boat angler some options to tangle with big game as many times they can be within 15 to 30 miles. Look for the BFT bite to be going strong all summer long, and prepare your arsenal now.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4304,4301'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • Hot summer days bring in the creatures that drive the Jersey Shore news cycle – sharks. You don’t have to venture far offshore to have at some serious big game action as many coastal sharks such as threshers, browns, duskies, hammerheads and blacktips can be caught from a half mile to 5 miles off the coast, giving small boat anglers a real chance at tangling with heavy duty fare. Here’s how to set up: Start with some chum. Go with the usual 5 gallon bucket of bunker chum, lid off and hanging upside down in a chum bag. Get that slick rolling and keep it going, mixing in some fresh bunker chunks to spice up the slick. Best baits are fresh bunker as they are the predominant bait inshore at this time of year, but if you are having issues obtaining fresh menhaden, you can also utilize the ol’ shark bait standard mackerel fillets or fresh bluefish fillets. If you do use mackerel, go with small to medium size mackerel, not the horse macks, so that a smaller 50 to 100-pound shark will be able to inhale the bait whole. You’ll be fishing in shallow in about 40 to 100 feet of water. If you want to go with a standard set up, utilize a 50 Wide Shimano Tiagra or Penn International reels matched with 5’6’’ Seeker or Penn International rods. From the reels is 80 pound Quattro Camo line to which a 300 pound class Sampo barrel swivel is attached, to which a 3 to 5 ounce egg sinker is lined on through a 6 to 8 foot section of #15 wire leader. A size 10/0 Mustad hook #7691 is haywired onto the business end. You don’t need to send out the heavy duty cable shark rigs persay, but can scale down a little bit as you will be battling sharks that average from 50 to 100 pounds.Downsized set ups can start with a Shimano 25 TLD class reel, matched with a 30 to 80-lb class 6-foot rod, spooled with 50-pound mono line, to a 200-lb wind on leader and a size 11/0 Gamakatsu Big River hook on the business end. Set out four rods in a spread. Drop one rig on the bottom, dragging across to see if anything is patrolling the seafloor. The next two are set in 10 foot depth intervals, fluttering at about 20 and 30 feet down. The last line is a flat line, sent without weight about 30 feet back off the stern from the boat. Get ready, small boat coastal sharking is a blast and will have your crew buttoned up with some serious arm-bending action.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4277,4276'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Anglers operating under the guise of darkness are intercepting the silent ghosts of the Jersey area waters – weakfish. Its pot luck whether you can find one to tangle with, but when you do, they are large formidable battlers in the 5 to 10-pound range. To try for the treasure, here are some tips: Go light. Affectionately known as “papermouths”, weakfish are notorious for spitting hooks and shedding hooksets if your tackle is too heavy. I use a moderate action, 6-1/2 foot Shimano Terramar rod fixed with a Shimano Sustain 4000 reel spooled with 20-pound Power Pro braided line, and the drag is set a few steps above loose. To the braided line, tie a uni to uni knot to a 28-inch section of 15-pound Seaguar or Yo-Zuri TopKnot fluorocarbon line, to which any number of lures can be tied onto. When choosing lure selection, go pink, or any combination of pink and another color. For some reason, weakfish dig that color pattern. 4 to 5-3/4 inch Fin-S in Bubble Gum or Bubble Gum Ice are my go-to lure, but Zoom Super Flukes and Bass Assassins are comparable offerings. Small 3-inch Storm or Tsunami shads also fit the bill, as do ½-ounce white or white/yellow combo bucktails tipped with pink Berkley Gulp! Swimmin Minnows. Many times a bare 1/4 to ½-ounce leadhead tipped with a 3-inch grub tail will also work. The key is to match the hatch of bait around whether it be spearing, peanut bunker or bay anchovies.I recall being so frustrated a few summers back when the cinder worms were hatching and there were hundreds of weakfish slurping them down, but I couldn’t get even one strike as I did not have anything resembling a 2–inch cinder worm in my arsenal. I was subjected to watching 3 to 5 pounders sip down worms in front of me all night long, but the next time I went out, I was sure to have a Berkley Gulp sandworm imitation rigged on a 1/8-ounce leadhead awaiting them. The key to any success is in the retrieve. Weakfish like the rubber baits to be presented with a slow to moderate, steady reeling pace, most times without twitching or bouncing it. Simply cast out and reel in slow and steady so the lure is a couple feet above the bay bottom. Weakies will sink their teeth into the bait and hang on, initially feeling like dead weight, but then with some head shaking antics to dislodge the hook. Remember, weakfish are truly hard to find nowadays, so be sure to release any you may catch.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4263,4264'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

            Fin-S Lures
If any artificial lure can mimic a baitfish better than the original Slug-Go, it's got to be the Fin-S Fish, with its thinner, deeper-bodied profile and forked tail. The Fin-S Fish has been part of the Lunker City line up since the mid-eighties.View[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

            Soft Bait Swim Shad Lure
