    • Black sea bass are moving back to the inshore grounds and summertime sessions can end with a loaded cooler on a day trip. Inshore ridges, ledges and structure piles will all harbor sea bass through the sunny summer days, and a few tricks can up your catch quota. Bells and whistles actually work for sea bass, so long as you use the right ones. I’ve found that a few specific adornments seem to spark the sea bass to bite better: Orange, red or purple beads threaded on above the hook are fine attractants as are red 3-inch Mister Twister curly tail grubs, 4-inch Gulp! Swimmin’ Mullets, and white or purple B2 squids. Jigging is also a hot way to get a sea biscuit to bite. Bounce the bottom with slender metal jigs such as Ava size 27 to 67 with green, red and black tails, OB Fish company Hammered Diamond jig or Williamson Benthos jigs.A subtle jigging approach is utilized, and instead of a usual swing for the fences type of approach like in bluefishing, you want to keep that iron right on the bottom and simply tap-tap-tap the rod up in short 8 to 12-inch strokes so that the appearance is of a fluttering baitfish just inches off the ocean floor. Bucktails can also be excellent sea bass attractors. A proper offering is a 1-ounce Spro bucktail tipped with a 4-inch bait strip of squid. When the small bucktail sinks, jig in short strokes along wreckside structure or glacial rockpiles where scores of knuckleheads are hanging out. This method gives you a primo option to target bass hanging higher on the structure while presenting a much more flowing natural approach with the lighter weighted bucktail.Sea bass are aggressive pack eaters and when you hook one fish, chances are you’re going to hook another next to it. A slight trick to up your catch count is to take advantage of their pack mentality. On a Hi-Lo rig with 40-pound TrikFish leader and two dropper loops fixed with size 3/0 Octopus Gamakatsu hooks, bait up with a slice of fresh clam or squid strip. Once you hook into one fish, set the hook but then leave the rig down there while the one fish is hooked up. The commotion will attract the other sea bass around to come investigate and that’s when you will feel the second and third hits almost immediately. This way instead of reeling in one at a time, you can be pulling double or tripleheaders on each drop.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4250,4248'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • In New Jersey, top area waters include the Manasquan River, Barnegat Bay, Great Bay, Great Egg Harbor, Ludlam’s Bay and Cape May Harbor, as many of the shallow bays will span water depths from 5 feet up on the flats to about 15 feet in the heart of the ICW channels. Early season fluke fishing will revolve around light tackle tactics in the back bays as the general population of flatfish inhabits the backwaters as they move into skinny waters to warm up and feed. Concentrate your efforts around high tide hours, mainly two hours before and two hours after the dead high as fluke will feed at the switch of the tide when the current is moving slowly enough to grab an easy meal flushing by.When it comes to back bay fluking, you won’t find anyone else on the planet that loves using bucktails more than me. Bucktails offer ultimate control on how to tease up a fluke from off the bottom. A round head style is my number one shape, though when the tide starts ripping a bit, switch up to an arrowhead shape that will cut down on drag. Many manufacturers including Andrus, S&S, MagicTail will fit the bill, and sizes will span ¼ ounce to 1-1/2 ounces, but general average weight to use is about 3/8 to ½-ounce. Favorite color patterns include straight white, white/yellow, white/chartreuse when spearing are around, but when mantis shrimp or crabs are common, go with a white/orange or orange/brown bucktail. You can also opt to go naked. Kalin’s leadheads can also be used but don’t have the flash or enticing flutter of a bucktail. Whatever leadhead you choose, you definitely want to tip it with a variety of baits such as bluefish strips, mackerel strips, fluke belly, Berkeley Gulp! Swimmin’ Minnow or New Penny Shrimp.Rigs should consist of a 50-pound Spro Barrel Swivel, a 28-inch section of 25-pound SeaGuar Fluorocarbon leader to which a dropper loop is tied 12 inches down from the swivel, then a loop knot on the end to the bucktail. A light 2/0 to 3/0 bucktail flash mylar teaser is fixed on the dropper, or a size 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook which can then be tipped again with a strip bait. If bucktailing isn’t your thing, you can also opt to drag lighter drift rigs through. Start with a braid-friendly fishfinder slide clip, a 100-pound Spro Barrel Swivel, 26-inch section of 25-pound SeaGuar Fluorocarbon leader and a size 3/0 Gamakatsu or Owner Octopus Hook snelled on the business end. Clip on a 1 to 4-ounce bank sinker. Tip the hook with one single strip of mackerel, bluefish, squid or fluke belly, approximately 5 inches long and a half inch wide cut, tapered on each end to allow a natural flutter. Drift the rig and engage the reel when a fluke pounces.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4215,4214'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • The fluke regs are set in Jersey. Like them or not it is what it is – 3 fish at 18 inches around the state’s waters except in the Delaware Bay where its 3 fish at 17 inches and on Island Beach State Park where shore fishing stands at two fish at 16 inches. The season for all areas runs from May 25th to September 5th. Ok, now that you’ve got all that, you need to get geared up for both the early season bayside fishery and when the fishery moves Oceanside during the summertime. Here’s a general checklist of gear, rods, reels and all you’ll need for both shallow water bay and deep water ocean fluke fishing for the season:Rods: Bay – 6-1/2 to 7 foot rated for 8 to 17-pound. St. Croix TIS70MHF, Shimano Teramar TMC-66M. Ocean - Conventional rated 15 to 40-pound– Lamiglas BL7040C Okuma SCT Boat Rod SCT-C-701H.Reels: Bay - Shimano Stradic 5000, Okuma Azores 40S, Penn Battle 4000. Ocean - Shimano Trinidad TN16, Avet SXJ.Terminal Tackle: 50 to 75-pound Spro barrel swivels, size#1 Sea Striker three way swivels with sinker clips, braid-friendly fishfinder slide clips, 20 to 30-pound Seaguar or Yo-Zuri TopKnot fluorocarbon leader, hooks Gamakatsu 2/0 to 3/0 Octopus, Mustad size 2/0 to 4/0 Kahle, assortment 2 to 12-ounce bank sinkers.Running Line: 15 to 30-pound Power Pro, Sufix 832 braided line or 12 to 15-pound monofilament line, Yo-Zuri Hybrid.Extra Gear: You’ll always need indispensable tools to help unhook fish, cut lines quickly and fillet your catch. Go with Cuda 18828 Titanium Bonded Needle Nose Pliers, Cuda18127 9-inch fillet knife, Cuda 18226 Micro scissors and Rapala RSSP6 6/5-inch stainless steel pliers and for deck boots, XTRATuf ankle deck boots and Grundens bibs to keep you clean. The rest of your checklist should include an assortment of various lures. My absolute favorite fluke enticers are white white/chartreuse Spro bucktails from 2 to 6-ounce, Andrus 3/8 to ½-ounce round head bucktails in white/yellow, 3 to 4-inch Berkley Gulp! New Penny Shrimp or white Swimmin’ Mullet baits, Zoom Super Fluke rubber baits, and a variety of fluke spin-n-glo drift rigs equipped with squid skirts, flashy bucktail and spinning blades.Mind you, this just scratches the surface on what you could really use to start out fluke fishing. Start crossing this checklist off now and be prepared for May 25 opening day. Next blog, we will get into where to go for your first shot at fluke.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4195,4196'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Last week I explored the Crystal River waters along Florida’s panhandle and took a day to target redfish with Captain Danny Allen out of Cedar Key Florida. I’ve fished for reds plenty of times in Mississippi, Louisiana and other such locales containing arenas of flat muddy bottoms, but this spot was a little bit different. The Crystal River waters are a combination of sandy flats that lead into grassy banks, but with the added sticky structure of submarine limestone chunks and mussel beds in the muck. The snaggy structure required we utilize lures that would bounce over the rocks, thus we went for spoons. ” I’ll set the Power Pole down about 50 feet off the banks, it allows us to stay in one spot and work an entire area over well,” said Allen. “Make the cast right to the grassbanks, especially in the little cubby holes that have that limestone rock, that’s where the reds push up on the flats on the flood tides and hang.”We launched Johnson Silver Minnow spoons in ¼ to ½ ounce sizes chartreuse/silver, black/sliver and straight up gold colorings. For gear, as Crystal River reds generally range between 2 to 15 pounds or so, go with a 7 to 8 foot medium power, fast action rod fit with a medium power reel to fit the bill, such as an Okuma EVX-S-711Mb, 7 foot 1-inch rod rated 6-12lbs matched with a Penn 2500 Battle reel or an Okuma Inspira 40B. Spool with 30-pound Yo-Zuri Braid, uni to uni knot a 6 foot section of 25 to 30-pound Yo-Zuri TopKnot Fluorocarbon Leader, to which a loop knot tied directly to the spoon.Regarding method, Allen adds, ““I like to slow roll the lure, meaning I bring it in at a slow to moderate pace so it wobbles just above the seafloor. If I’m really bumping stuff, I will reel just a hair faster so as not to snag up.” The slow, mesmerizing flash of the spoon gets shellacked by redfish; they simply cannot let the attraction pass by unmolested. In a two hour session, we dialed in 15 redfish from schoolie size up to slot at 26 inches long, and left them biting. The spoons hit their mark, and are the perfect lure when hitting structure areas for reds.Southern Salt Charters Captain Danny Allen 352.215.3686 www.cedarkeyoutfitters.com[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4173,4172'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

            • Want to get dialed in on the spring Weakfish run that takes place each May in New Jersey and New York? This week, Nick shares a few tips towards landing a true tiderunner.Spiketooth, Papermouth, Yellowfin – there are many names for the bejeweled flanked Weakfish. Without a doubt, weakfish are not around in the numbers they have historically been in Jersey waters, in most cases its either feast or famine during the summers, where we could have a fantastic year of spike weakfish by the thousands, or absolutely none at all. Nobody really knows what each year will bring. What does seem to be pretty consistent however, is finding large tiderunner weakfish running through not only Jersey, but New York waters as well in May. Spring months offer up the best shot at landing a true tiderunner of 8 to 12 pounds.Weakfish have notoriously thin mouths and are apt to shake their heads to dislodge hooks, or simply pull hooks through their paper-like mouths, thus you want to implement light tackle and very light drag settings. Lighter set ups include something like a 6-1/2 to 7-foot spinning rod with medium power and medium/fast action such as the Shimano Terramar TMS-F70M, matched with small spinning reels like a 2500 to 3000 Shimano Stradic. I like spooling up with monofilament 8-pound test, or 12-pound braided line, then uni knot to a section of 8 to 10-pound Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon, loop knot to the lure tied directly. Do not use any terminal tackle whatsoever as weakfish have keen eyesight and spook at the drop of a dime. Soft rubber baits work wonders to trick weakies with proven offerings including Zoom Super Flukes, Fin-S Fish 4 to 5-3/4-inch size in color patterns of Watermelon, Rainbow Trout, Bubble Gum Ice and straight up Pink. Use these baits in the mildly deep ICW channels and on the backflats of the bays, covering the lower third of the water column. With the drag setting light, simply reel the bait slow and steady, not necessarily a twitch-jerk retrieve. If fishing deeper waters, such as holes that carve off of points, inside inlets and along deep cuts of the sodbanks where the tide rips through, go with light 3/8 to ½-ounce bucktails. I prefer white, white/yellow and white and pink colorings on the bucktails, and will tip the hook with a 3-inch white Berkeley Gulp! Swimmin’ mullet, piece of shedder crab, or the real old school tactic – a long, purple jelly worm. Bounce the bucktails near the very bottom when drifting through the deep waters as big weakfish will hunker down, sucking baitfish and forage as it washes by with the tide. Even though in New Jersey there is one fish limit at 13 inch minimum size instated on weakfish, my opinion is to release all weakfish, especially the big breeding tiderunners over 6 pounds and greater. Good luck, catching any weakfish over 5 pounds is truly quite the feat![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4139,4143'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
