    • Blues have arrived for Jersey anglers in a big way. Once again, Jersey has been graced with the initial run of gator blues ranging from 5 to 15 pounds in the backwater bays of Ludlam’s Bay, Barnegat Bay, the Manasquan River and Absecon Bay.I’m going to go into some boat fishing tactics here, and its all about knowing how to pop them up to maximize your catch. First of all, morning and evening hours seem to be producing best, from 7 AM to about 10 AM then again at 5 PM to about 8 PM, but if you have a day to spend in the backwaters, I’m sure you can find them chomping anytime. Topwater popping is probably the most exciting method to tangle with blues when they are in solid and strong.Start with a rod that has some muscle, somewhere in between from a light set up and heavy set up, enough of a happy medium to make the fight about 3 to 5 minutes long to battle the fish to boatside, but not underwhelm it and burn the fish out. I usually use a 7 foot Penn Torque TT2050S70 rod rated for 20 to 50-pound, matched with a Penn Slammer 760 reel. Spool with 50-pound Power Pro, then create your leader with heavier duty, 24-inch piece of 60-pound test Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon leader, to which a 125-pound Tactical Anglers clip is tied onto via Palomar knot.Poppers can run the gamut of types, but you really need a hardcore model able to withstand a couple beatings, such as a Tactical Anglers 2 to 3-ounce Bomb Popper or Creek Chub Knucklehead popper. I recommend removing any treble hooks and replacing them with size 3/0 Siwash hooks, and you only really need them on the back end of the popper as bluefish tend to hit the tail to disable any bait in effort to chop the motor off the fish. Too many trebles will usually result in a hook in the hand or an incorrigible tangle in the net. (see picture)Work the sodbanks in south Jersey, or simply find a ledge, dial in the bluefish harassing bunker schools inside Barnegat Bay, or blindcast without a method to any madness to find bluefish. Work the popper to churn and splash, but keep it moving at a moderate pace, too fast and you’ll get short strikes, too slow and it doesn’t look like a realistically fleeting bunker. When the hit comes, set back hard and enjoy the biggest battle you will find in the back bays. The bay bluefish run should last well into the third week of May, prepare to be shocked![vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4124,4128'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • Anglers are used to hoofin’ it to get to the bite. In Jersey, both striped bass and bluefishing is really getting underway now, with a majority of the action coming from the backwater bridges, docks and surf.Down south from North Carolina to Florida, anglers are walking salt creeks, as well as working the surf and inlets for a variety or redfish, speckled trout and snook. Point is, springtime means a “Boots on the Ground” mentality many times, and whether walking jetties, inlets, river systems or the surf you need to have a tight walking gear package put together to insure you’re prepared. I’m not going to go into any specific rigs, rods or reels here, but cover the bases needed so you don’t have that “Ah man, why didn’t I bring that?” feeling when you’re a mile away from your car. To start, here are some apparel essentials: Neoprene chest waders are a must for colder water surfcasting, but springtime climes canvas models made by Hodgman, Pro-Line or Simms will be lighter and airier and just fine. If traversing slippery rock terrain, be sure to strap on a pair of Korkers Casttrax Overshoe. When wading the tropical flats for bonefish or in mucky rivers for redfish, pick up a pair of wading boots via Hodgman H3. For wind protection, grab a Grundens Stormlight hooded light jacket and to beat the sun’s glare; a pair of Costa Blackfin 580 lens sunglasses. You need to be mobile to chase down shore fish, and backpacks are the perfect organizational conduit. Backpacks that contain tons of compartments and Plano box holders include the Plano 3700 Z-series bag, capable of holding four 3700 series Plano boxes filled with lures and the Wild River Light Nomad backpack, a nifty pack that also includes a built-in cutting board and LED light. Fill that pack with the essential accessories. Tools for unhooking and cutting include Cuda brand standouts like their Titanium Needle Nose Pliers, Titanium small Dehooker, and Bait Knife. For ease of clipping lines in realtime, I like the Boomerang BCT203 line cutting tool or a lowly pair of nail clips on a lanyard around my neck. Headlamps are a must when fishing the night shift, try the elastic band Baker LED Headlamp. For proper measurement of fish you intend to keep, a retractable tape measure and even a Rapala 50-lb digital weigh scale can be easily carried in the pack. And of course, in a pinch, the ol’ hobo-style 5 gallon bucket is always a good substitute if you don’t have a pack to carry everything. These are the basics in any bag that I carry to be prepared for any scenario on the land borne fishing grounds. Am I missing any essential mobile gear here? Feel free to comment below.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4106,4118'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • White Perch may not be the hardest fighting fish you can encounter in the Northeast, but some think they are grade A table fare. Nick's tips below in this week's blog! It’s not big game fishing, heck its barely even saltwater fishing, but in the salt creeks of New Jersey, mainly the Mullica, Maurice, Tuckahoe and Cohansey rivers, white perch fishing is tops in the spring and summer. What white perch lack in size, they make up for fight and absolutely are my favorite saltwater crossover species in the frying pan with succulent light fillets that can be beer battered and sautéed to perfection. It’s all about shrimpin’ and wormin’. Get set up with a light tackle freshwater type rod like a St. Croix 6-foot, matched with a light 2500 to 3500 class spinning reel spooled with Tufline 12-pound braid or Seaguar mono line, it doesn’t really matter too much. Start up by picking a ledge or channel where you have running water, and anchor up. Begin to dish out a chum slick with dropping a clam pot down with clam chum, then grab your grass shrimp, lightly spraying shrimp by the handful into the waters. As the shrimp sink, they attract white perch to come cruising up through the channel waterways. Rigs are simple. Buy or create your own hi-lo pill float rigs with a 50-lb Spro barrel swivel, 20-lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, size #6 to #8 Mustad baitholder #92641 hooks and a size 1 to 2-ounce bank sinker on the bottom. Tip the hook with three to four grass shrimp, or 1-inch bits of bloodworms or sandworm and send it down.Early morning through a sunny afternoon, into the evening, white perch will be on the chew as they move along with the tides. You can even catch fish during the night time, be sure to have a reliable Baker headlamp and pair of Cuda pliers to quickly unhook fish into the icebox and get back in the game immediately, because when whiteys are on the chew, you can easily land 50 to 100 fish if you’ve got them greedily feeding in the slick. For added fun, chuck out a shrimp ball on a float rig to get that exciting strike that takes the bobber under and runs for the horizon. White perching is a blast for kids and experienced anglers alike, and believe me, you’ll be out perching again with all the action and the reward of the tasty meal in the pan.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='4086,4098'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Suggested Gear'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Want some tips on bagging a limit of early season blackfish in New Jersey? Nick shares his tips and go to setups for tackling neashore and backwater blackfish.New Jersey anglers are lucky enough to have the blackfish season reopened on April 1 with a 4 fish bag limit and 15-inch minimum size, but alas, it then closes yet again after April 30. As blackfish migrate back to shallower waters this month, look to target rockpiles and wrecks close along shore in 20 to 50 feet of water, and even get ready to ply the bay backwaters around canals, bridge pilings and piers, especially during the latter part of the month. Usually, tog have soft mouths right now from wintering over in frigid waters, making fresh clam baits and thin shelled crabs like fiddler crabs or Asian crabs being palatable baits. This winter however has been pretty mild so you might be able to go right into using green crabs and whiteleggers. A majority of the early season backwater and nearshore tog will be “chocolate chips” of short size up to fish reaching around 5 to 6 pounds.Early season nearshore, pier and bridge tog can best be battled with a 6-1/2 to 7-foot moderate to heavy action rod, such as the Penn RAMBW3050S70 PEN-1073 and brawny reel like a Penn Battle BTLII6000 PEN-1335 or Shimano Spheros SP6000SW SHM-2759 with enough stopping power to turn the head of a tog. Spool up with 50-lb Power Pro Braid. For fishing fresh clams, a pier slide bottom rig consists of a 1 to 3-ounce egg sinker above a 100-lb Spro barrel swivel, a short 18-inch leader section of 50-lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and a size # 2/0 Owner or Gamakatsu Octopus hook. If using fiddler or Asian crabs, employ the use of a section of 50-lb Trik Fish monofilament leader, tie an overhand loop on the end to which a 3 to 5-ounce bank sinker is looped, then pinch a loop 5 inches up from the sinker and loop to loop on a snelled # 4 to #5 Virginia style hook. That vertical bottom rig allows the crab bait to bounce enticingly up and down off the bottom. Tides play a big part for success, with best times to fish around the last hour of incoming the entire slack tide, then first hour of outgoing. Hit your favorite piers, canals and bridges, as well as rocks and wrecks nearshore and see if you can hang a few blackfish before the season closes. • Nick was lucky enough to cover the BassMaster Classic in Houston, Texas last weekend. Read his take on BASS's largest tournament of the season in this week's blog post.Combine NASCAR-heavy advertising, omnipresent BBQ, a zillion American flags and high-flyin’ largemouth bass, and you’ve got the 47th annual BassMaster Classic, held last week on Lake Conroe near Houston, Texas. I was able to cover the tournament for Outdoor Life Magazine, and let me tell ya, it was an eye-opening experience on a whole different level. To start, 25 year old Jordan Lee, won the whole thing in only his second eligible year. That’s impressive in a field of 52 of the best bass anglers in America. Lee tossed a Strike King Bullworm on a ½-ounce shakey head and also used a Strike King 5XD.Being a Jersey homer, I hung out with Jersey native Mike Iaconelli, who placed 6th at the event, where he spilled some secrets on his rigs. Ike tossed a Carolina Rig, comprised of a 6-inch Berkley PowerBait Lizard, ½-ounce barrel sinker, and 3/0 VMC offset worm hook. He also had some luck finding bucketmouths using a Berkley Bottom Hopper and Berkley Devil Spear, while casting with 25-lb Berkley 100% fluorocarbon. A couple of the interesting products I saw there were the Live Target Bait Ball series, specifically their Glass Minnow and Yearling patterns. These lures are gonna be killer on striped bass when all they are feeding on is bay anchovies and spearing. Also, you have to check out the Savage Gear Suicide Duck. It’s so ridiculous looking, but it catches pike and I have seen it actually hook a redfish in Louisiana. Ok, technical specs aside, I have to say that the entire BassMaster experience is one fun gig.Being behind the scenes to socialize with the likes of Ike, Kevin Van Dam, and Bill Dance kind of brought me back to those early days of fishing as a kid when all I knew of was largemouth bass. Little did I know that when I opened that piece of mail and joined the B.A.S.S club in 1984 would I be covering the BassMaster nearly 33 years later. I guess it came full circle, and I still have that B.A.S.S patch buried somewhere in my gear. No doubt, just being around so many bucketmouth obsessed anglers has reinstated my drive to go hit the sweetwater once again. Its all about getting back to your roots, where you first learned to love that tug on the line.
