    • The warm weather lately has us thinking about summer days offshore. Don't forget your lighter spinning tackle to bring home some serious table fare with some mahi off the pots. Its pretty common knowledge that mahi tend to gravitate around floating debris, flotsam and jetsam drifting in the ocean, as well as by lobster pot hi-fliers and weed patches. Floating structure attracts dolphin to feed upon the growth and baitfish that congregate on the objects as the entire food chain evolves. The key is learning how to pick those mahi off that structure.Start with a St. Croix TIS66MM 6-1/2 foot medium spinning rod rated for 8 to 17-pound. Match a Shimano Stradic 4000 reel spooled with 20-pound Power Pro braided line. Tie a 75-lb Spro barrel swivel, then a 30-inch section of 30-lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader to which a loop knot is wrapped on the eye of a round head bucktail jig. Andrus, S&S bucktails and MagicTail make excellent bucktails. Go with relatively small, light bucktails of ½ to 2-ounces to pull mahi off the pots as they can be jigged with maximum life-like effectiveness as their sink rate is slower and more natural than heavier jigs. White, white/chartreuse, and white/pink color patterns always seem to produce for me. Without a doubt, tipping the bucktail hook with some flavor intensifies the attraction. Many offerings can be lanced on the hook, including fluke bellies, live killies, squid tentacles or strips, and any kind of strip bait like false albacore, bonito, bluefish or mackerel, or you can opt for artificials such as a Berkley Gulp! 5-inch jerk shad or 4-inch Swimming Mullet, or 5-3/4-inch Fin-S Fish in Electric Chicken, Bubble Gum or Rainbow Trout. The strategy to fooling mahi with a bucktail is threefold – in location, presentation and retrieval speed. If working a pot line or marker buoy, take the boat out of gear upcurrent of the target about a hundred yards, staying a good 40 feet or so away so as not to spook any fish, and make your casts past the target, allowing the bucktail to sink for a good three count to start. Proceed to jig the bucktail in short, jerky strokes back to the boat for a strike. You want the bucktail to present itself naturally in the current, on an up and down fleeing away approach. If no hits come from the surface, try deeper. Allow the bucktail to sink a good 30 feet or so, then work the bucktail back up the water column, pulling the deep rooted dolphin to come up. A major factor in a successful catch rate is to keep the dolphin feeding. When you do hook up with one, use the textbook method of leaving the rod in the rod holder with the dolphin attached as the fluttering, feeding hooked dolphin will pique the curiosity of the rest of the pack.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='3836,3846'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • From Florida to New Jersey to Cabo San Lucas, small-boat anglers can easily be into some reel-screaming speedsters including false albacore, Spanish mackerel, mahi, skipjack tuna, and bonito. It’s easy to rig right to tackle inshore speed demons.Smaller, large capacity reels are the way to go, matched with lightweight trolling rods such as a Penn Rampage or Penn Ally . Trolling reels such as Penn 525, Penn Squall 30LD or Shimano TLD fit the bill. Spool up with 50-pound braided line, with a 10 foot top shot of 40-pound mono leader via wind on leader or Albright knot, to which a 250-pound snap swivel is attached via offshore knot. The trolling leader and lure is then attached to the snap.Feathers, cedar plugs, metals, and squid skirts are all choice lures to attract speedster attention. Attractive offerings I use in my spread include 00 Clark Spoons , 4-inch Cedar plugs, Williamson blue/white Dorado Catcher and black/purple Flash Feather. Colors can range all over the board, but for me I’ve found green/yellow usually attracts mahi, blue/white gets skippies, bonito and even small bluefin, black/purple/pink for skippies, albies and bones, and metals for Spanish macks. On small craft, you can run six lines effectively - two off the flat lines, two in the stern gunnels and two out the rocket launchers on the gunnels. If six lines is overwhelming, a four line spread is easily manageable on a small craft and is just as effective. Cruise at a 5 to 7 knot pace, paying attention when going with and against the tide, adjusting the throttle accordingly and occasionally bumping the engines in and out of gear or turning frequently to shift the depth presentation of the spread in the water column, which many times can encourage a fish that has been following and interested to strike.Keep the lures just below the surface, sometimes allowing them to break the water’s surface to create some splishing and splashing and work over ledges, reef sites and wrecks where many speedsters congregate. A solid spread will have two lines right in the prop wash, two on the first wake and two on the second wake. Watch the rod tips buckle down, listen for that clicker to scream and hold on tight to some liquid lightning.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='3797,3796'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        Shimano

Shimano TLD-15 Triton Lever Drag Reel
You don't need a big boat to catch big fish. In fact, there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't catch a 250-pound thresher shark from your 20-foot center console boat. Unless you left your Shimano TLD at home. If you own a small fishing boat, or you often find yourself elbow-to-elbow with your angling compatriots on the large party boats, you need a reel that's both nimble and versatile.View[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] [instagram-feed id='3945030428'][vc_row full_width='stretch_row_content_no_spaces' type='full_width_content'][vc_column css='.vc_custom_1459892926495{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}'][vc_text_separator title='']" target="_blank">

        • When the bite offshore gets slow, why not drop down a jig to bring something tasty home for the table?Luckily, I’ve been blessed to fish around the Eastern hemisphere from St. Lucia to Montauk to Cabo San Lucas, and sure the glamorous species of marlin, tuna, and other pelagics are the main fare on the menu, I’m always prepared for the species down deep you don’t expect on any given trip. Many “offshore” locations and outfitters simply overlook the bottomfishing opportunity and forgo exploring the reefs and wrecks that hold big time bruisers. Grouper, snapper, amberjack, mackerel and a plethora of unexpected species lay on the bottom and when the pelagic fishery is slow, and you always need to have a bottomfishing back up plan. In any location from Louisiana to the Sea of Cortez, jigging is the finest way to find some serious fare.In my tackle box, I always have an array of 2 to 12-ounce metal jigs like the Williamson Vortex, Shimano Butterfly, Crippled Herring and Hammered Diamond jigs, while also harboring plenty of 1 to 5-ounce Spro bucktails in white, green, pink and yellow color patterns. Bucktails can be tipped with strips of false albacore, mackerel or any other baitfish locally available. Speed jigging works to attract attention of AJ’s, cero mackerel and cobia that hang above and around a wreck or reef structure, while bounce-tapping the bottom or yo-yo jigging works well to hang snapper, grouper and cod deep down. As you’ll be fishing depths anywhere from 40 to 300 feet in general, prepare two types of jigging set ups - high speed and slower speed.A high speed spinning set up to snap jigs above the wreck would be a Shimano Stella STL14000SWBXG reel matched with a Shimano Trevala TVS66MH2 rod. A more methodical moderate bottom tapping set up would be a Lamiglas 7040 CT rod matched with a Shimano Torium 20. Any reel should be spooled with 50-pound Power Pro green braid, Albright knot a 10 foot section of 50-lb Trik Fish leader for shock, and tie the jig direct. Bang it out and see what down there. One trip in Panama while filming my TV show, the marlin fishing was slow so we set up on a rocky ledge in 150 feet of water, bounced hammered diamond jigs, and loaded up on 20 to 40-pound mullet snapper and yellowtail snapper. Bottomfishing the structure piles saved the day, as it always seems to do.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='3778,3777'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
