    • In this week's blog, Nick hits the murky canal waters of the Florida Bay backcountry targeting snook, redfish, and speckled troutThe Florida Keys are famous for gin clear water flats fishing, but there is another, murkier side to the Keys. This week I downed a strong cup of coffee at the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost, in Islamorada, and joined Captain Mike Venezia of Boned Up Charters with a different kind of fishing in mind. Gone were the crystal clear flats, and welcomed were the muddied canal waters up in Florida Bay. On target were snook, redfish, seatrout and black drum - not the complete usual suspects when one thinks of the Keys.Light tackle is in store to work the canal waterways. I employed a 7-foot TIS70MHF3 St. Croix Travel Rod matched with a Shimano Stradic C 5000 reel, spooled with 30-pound Power Pro, then Uni to Uni Knot a 5 feet section of 30-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon, tied with Homer Rhode or regular Loop Knot to a light ¼ to 3/8-ounce Kalins chartreuse jighead. Tipped on the jighead was a fresh lively shrimp or a Berkeley Gulp! 3-inch New Penny shrimp. The backchannel waters were filled with big time boils while Mike and I cast out against mangrove-lined mud banks. Mike was hooked up first with a solid snooklet of 20 inches long. I followed by bouncing my Gulp! Shrimp off a sunken branch to land a beauty whitewashed 26 inch redfish. Dozens more redfish, snook and trout hit the light jigs and shrimp. Light tackle is preferred when fishing close to the mangroves, but tighten the drag down solid as snook will test the limits of tackle when jumping and pulling toward the root systems. In three hours of fishing, we dialed in a flats grand slam of redfish, snook and trout, all before noontime. To be prepared for every situation, be sure to carry Calcutta pliers, wear Xtra Tuf ankle deck boots for deck grippability, Costa sunglasses to shade from the sharp, Keys sun glare (I use Blackfin models which keep the sun out 360 degrees) and as mornings can be windy with a little chill before the sun comes up, bring some light Grundens Weather Watch raingear. Contact Capt. Mike Venezia of Boned Up Charters at and Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost, in Islamorada to set up a day crushing snook, reds, seatrout, black drum, snapper and sharks in the Florida Bay backcountry.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1485876128429-956a0435a2a0f25f6c84919907eacd12-3' include='3721,3720'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • In late January and early February, trophy blackfish of 10 to 20 pounds will be holing up a bit deeper in the 80-120 ft range along the DelMarVa coast. Some truly titanic blackfish show up in late January and early February as the bite slides south off of south Jersey, through Delaware and into Virginia. Trophy blackfish of 10 to 20 pounds will be holing up a bit deeper in the 80 to 120 foot range now along the DelMarVa coast. Rod and reel gear requires serious backbone.A 7 to 7-1/2 foot rod, rated for heavy action is recommended. I use a Lamiglas 7040 CT, Fin-Nor Tidal FNTC61040, and have tried out the Maxel OMGC 701-4080 OceanMax Gold Conventional Rod, all which have worked well to turn a tog’s head. Reels need to be sturdy and powerful. Go with an Avet SX 5.3 G2 or Shimano Torium 20. Spool with 50 to 65-pound braided Power Pro line, Albright knot at a 10 foot section of 50 to 60-pound monofilament leader, then tie an overhand loop to loop on a 6 to 12-ounce bank sinker, heavy enough to quickly get to the bottom, but light enough to feel the subtle bites. About 8 inches above the sinker, loop on one snelled 5/0 Gamakatsu or Owner Octopus hook, the snell just long enough to rest the hook on the bottom. If you choose, you may also tie a small dropper loop 8 inches up and loop on a two-hook snafu rig for hookset insurance. For bait, white legger crabs reign supreme. Serve the crab baits up a la carte; either cut a large monster crab in half to use, bigger can be better, but don’t be afraid to go with one small one, cracked shell, legs off. Large tog tend to pick up the entire rig, you will feel like your sinker just disappeared as it comes off the bottom as the weight alleviates, signaling the big tog has grabbed it and has started to run off. Fighting trophy tog requires patience and muscle. Its of paramount importance to turn a blackfish’s head and pull it off the wreck before it dives back down to cut you off in the structure, much like a large grouper or snapper. Keep your rod tip high and reel as fast as you can to winch him off the structure, keeping in mind your drag should be almost locked down. Once you get blackfish above the wreck, expect three or four more dives back down, reel up slow and steady through the water column and have the net man ready for the scoop. Last year during this time period, a few 20-pound plus whitechinners came up. Time to catch your Moby Blackfish! • Like Nick's tips for soft plastics in the south? Here is a follow up with suggestions and techniques geared towards the northeast. We covered soft plastics for the south in last week’s blog, now let’s concentrate on what soft plastics reign supreme up north from New Jersey through the New England states. A different cast of characters inhabit the rocky jetties, boulder lined coasts, deep water bays and in the surf; including striped bass, bluefish, summer flounder, weakfish, and false albacore. Water temperatures are way cooler in general, but will enter tropical temperatures during the heat of the summer, allowing for a wide span of bait-mimicking profiles to utilize throughout the year as spearing, adult and peanut bunker, sand eels, bay anchovies and herring are the predominant baits.Starting from the bottom, if you’re not fluke fishing with Berkeley Gulp! Baits, you’re simply not in the game. Hot shot offerings include the 3 to 4-inch white Swimming Mullet or Natural Shrimp when plying the shallow 4 to 10 foot backwaters, while larger offerings like the 6-inch Gulp Grub in chartreuse or 4-inch Nemesis Chicken on a Chain (man I love that name) works best when tipped on large bucktails plying the ocean grounds or deep bays in 25 to 65 feet of water. All Northeast anglers know that striped bass are number one on the hit list. Jersey anglers tend to drop and jig 6-inch Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad in bunker pattern from the boat deck onto striper schools off the coast, while New England bass hounds prefer to cast Hogy Original 7 to 10-inch soft baits around boulder fields and rocky outcroppings, but I’ve seen many a Jersey and Montauk Angler surfcasting the Hogy baits off the jetties, rocks and surfline as well. For back bay bassing, the 3-inch Tsunami Holographic Shad or 5-inch Berkeley Gulp! Smelt Jerk Shad tipped on a light 3/8 to ½ ounce leadhead will pick off stripers from the sodbanks and pull ‘em out from under the docks.During predawn hours, weakfish can be found cruising bay channels during moving tides, and if you’re lucky enough to find them, toss out Zoom 5-inch Super Fluke in pink or 4 to 5-3/4-inch Fin-S fish in Bubble Gum or Rainbow Trout color patterns. A quick tip for weakfish is to reel the rubber bait in very slowly and methodically without even twitching it. False albacore speed around for a run and gun approach off the coastline and I’ve had success with the same Zoom grubs, but rigged with the ever so slightest weight, cast out and sharply twitch jerked frantically to garner a strike on the surface or down in the water column. And when it comes to bluefish, well, my advice is to not throw any soft plastics. You’ll just be wasting money. But if you must, any soft bait will work, just try and best mimic the bait that’s in the water at the time.[vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1484240710796-39c995fc3d21b362c92211363a6b07b4-8' include='3677,3675'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          Zoom

          Zoom Salty Super Fluke
The deep belly of the Super Fluke causes it to dart, glide and knuckleball through the water, while its universal baitfish size allows it to tempt both limit-sized bass and the biggest fish on your lake. Rigged weightless, it skitters across the surface like an injured shad, but a belly-weighted hook or some insert weights allow you to employ it as deep as necessary.View[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          Lunker City

          Lunker City Fin-S Lures
If any artificial lure can mimic a baitfish better than the original Slug-Go, it's got to be the Fin-S Fish, with its thinner, deeper-bodied profile and forked tail. The Fin-S Fish has been part of the Lunker City line up since the mid-eighties. In recent years, its fish catching abilities and its popularity with anglers have prompted a number of manufacturers to blatantly copy the Fin-S Fish — but none of the copies can come close to matching Lunker City's original in fish catching action or in color patterns that capture the appearance of various baitfish species.View[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

          • Jim Root explains why the Strike King Half Shell designed by KVD and Mark Zona is the BEST Drop Shot bait no matter the conditions. It seems like the world is flooded with soft plastic baits. Every possible color, size and scent imaginable. But I look for baits that will catch bass all year, in any condition. And that’s what you have in the Strike King Half Shell. This bait has just the right amount of scent, the right size, and the right action to get you on fish, and have guys photobombing you wondering how you caught them in 35 degrees when they didn’t.The Drop Shot HS (Half Shell) is 3.5 inches long, which is the perfect size bait to throw on your drop shot all year long. Smallmouth will eat this out of anger in the summer and not think twice about it because it’s not a huge meal, but it was designed to be deadly when the bait gets tough by using a blend of plastics that allow it to have great action and hold scent longer. This will entice the fish over a longer period of time and basically convince them to eat when other baits simply won’t. It also has that classic Strike King coffee scent that masks the stuff we have on our hands (lotion, oil, grease, etc) that can turn fish off immediately.I got a chance to use this bait for the first time at Lake Erie with my good friends Larry Mazur and Anthony Lorefice. It was November, and not the best conditions for being on Erie, but we still managed to bag some giant bass with this bait. We were using them with 3/4oz weights, in 25-40 feet of water. Our five best fish went around 25 pounds. There’s a short clip on YouTube from that trip where you and two friends can each win a pack of those baits right now. The winner will be announced at the end of the full video on January 18th, 2017. • Want tips on how to effectively increase your winter day's catch? Nick shares his take on how effective soft plastics can be on southern inshore species.

[vc_row][vc_column width='1/1']A rogue’s gallery of southern species inhabit the marshy channels, crystal clear flats, rushing inlets and calm water docks from North Carolina to Louisiana to Florida. You name it – seatrout, snook, redfish, flounder, jacks, ladyfish, tarpon and many other denizens are on tap and one of the most productive ways to target any southern species is with soft plastics, aka rubber baits. There’s no shortage of options when it comes to soft plastics on the market, but time and again, I’ve found a few particular offerings work best for southern species: When in Florida, you’re basically undergunned if you don’t have any DOA lures in your arsenal. Of particular note, the top model is the DOA Shrimp in Stark Naked and Gold Glitter color patterns, which works astoundingly well for everything from snook to seatrout. DOA CAL paddletails in 3 to 4-inch lengths are also all around solid baits when pilchards and glass minnows are present and utilize pepper/chartreuse tail and Purple haze colorings for the perfect imitation. When targeting snook around Florida docks during the mullet run, toss the 5-inch DOA BFL Original 430 for wicked topwater strikes. When redfishing the oftentimes murky muddied waters in North Carolina, Mississippi or Louisiana, success has come with an H&H Baby Bull Minnow in Avocado/Red Glitter, or with Zman StreakZ in Root Beer and the Zman Scented Jerk Shad in Redbone and Shiner colorings. Bouncing around the mudflats for southern flounder in Texas, Florida’s clear central bays and North Carolina channels, scented baits such as the Berkley Gulp! 3 to 4-inch Shrimp in New Penny and Swimmin’ Mullet in white or chartreuse are tops, while Bass Assassins 5-inch Shad Assassin in Rainbow Shad, Electric Chicken and Opening Night colors seem to find all southern species of backwater fish.Quite honestly, you can mix and match any of the aforementioned rubber baits to test in any scenario, but the real key to soft plastic success is to know what weights and when to throw them for every situation. All rubber baits should be rigged with lighter leadheads, 1/8 to 3/8-ounce for trout, redfish and ladyfish in the shallows or on the flats, while upping the weight to ½ to 1-ounce when fishing inlets or off docks and passes for bigger reds, snook and tarpon. The naked straight lead color is fine, but you can up your game for a streamlined effect on lures with colored leadheads in chartreuse, white or pink. Popular mold leadheads include the standard round ball design from various manufacturers, Bomber shad head jigs, and Kalin’s Ultimate Jighead. Obviously, there are hundreds of other soft plastic options to toss and try for species, but I’ve found plenty of southern success with these particular soft plastic/leadhead combinations. There are many shades of preferences when it comes to southern soft plastics, what are your favorite rubber baits for “Down South”?[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1483455163608-70367ccefd660beee37801080e04e9eb-3' include='3623,3625'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
