    • Bottomfishing is ideal for anglers of all ages and experience, offering an abundance of available target species up and down the East Coast.

[vc_row][vc_column width='1/1']Bottomfishing is a serious business across the coastal US, and dropping down on wrecks, reefs and rockpiles are tops in most anglers books, but more productively so if you have the right weaponry. Cod, blackfish, and red hake dominate the Northeast; red snapper, grouper and amberjack own the Mid-Atlantic; while cobia, king mackerel and a million other wreck beasties too numerous to list inhabit Florida’s reefs and bottom grounds. Deeper water targets demand you have gear that’s strong enough to winch in large fish while still having enough finesse to feel smaller fish on the bite. The key to success is lining up with solid gear to tackle bottom brawlers on any level.Average bottomfishing depths run from 40 to 250 feet, so a high capacity spool to hold plenty of line is a main consideration, as well as utilizing a high speed retrieve around a 6:1 ratio to turn the head of a large fish and winch it up from its lair before he can root down. Absolutely go with a conventional reel for maximum muscle power. Mid-level price point conventional reels for dropping baits include a Shimano Torium 16 to 20 or Penn Squall SQL30D levelwind, and for a more proactive approach to drop hammer jigs or bucktails, dial in a Shimano Talica 20 or Avet SXJ as the compact design on the reels offers tight and controlled action on the jig. Spool up with 50-to 65-lb Power Pro braid and connect via Albright knot a 8 to 10-foot top shot 40-to 50-lb Trik Fish monofilament shock leader to prevent any abrasive line cutting sharp edge cut offs of wrecks or jagged bottom structure when a fish tries to get you fully involved in his house. The shock leader also has enough give to prevent pulled hooks on fish such as AJ’s and blackfish when they dig down hard on their initial runs.Bottomfishing rods need to have consideration built to feel subtleties to bounce and feel the bottom structure, but have enough backbone to turn the nose of a 50-pound class fish once hooked. Look to use a 6 to 7 foot rod, rated anywhere from 20 to 50-pound, moderate to fast action, medium to heavy build. For live bait or chunk fishing, I implement a Lamiglas 7040 CT or BL 6640 C and for jigging purposes with metal slabs, butterfly jigs and big bucktails, I have had success with the Shimano Trevala TVC 60H and OceanMax MAX OMGS 661-3050. Have these rods and reels ready to put the beatdown on any fish that may come across your offering so you won’t be the one crying at the dock for the one you might have missed because your rod or reel slipped or broke. In future blogs, we’ll go over proper rigging and tactics for bottomfishing brawling species, but in the meantime, get your arsenal ready.[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1482432553249-dbe0dbb336eab51fa11342bc67b8e931-6' include='3598,3614'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

      • With the winter season on our doorstep, Nick Honachefsky provides a timely fishing checklist for traveling anglers heading south to Florida's warm waters.

[vc_row][vc_column width='1/1']Snowbirds from the Northeast looking to escape the winter wonderland head south to Florida’s boundless East, West and Keys coastlines to fish, but the key to a happy trip is to be properly prepared for productivity. From clothing to tackle, be ready to tackle all aspects of weather, conditions and species of fish. Weather wise, even though its usually swelteringly hot, mornings on the water do get chilly and bright, always remember to pack Costa polarized sunglasses, Grunden’s Stormlight windbreaker and a pair of Columbia wading shoes.Whether you fish from bridges, shorelines or via boat, you want to cover all angles of tackle for a variety of species and environments such as snapper on the bridges, speckled trout in the channels, tarpon rolling off the bulkhead, snook off the docks, etc. Fill a Plano 3700 series Tackle Bag with practical gear first, including a Headlamp, Calcutta Pliers and scissors, and a simple bait knife. Pack a variety of leader material Trik Fish 40 to 60-pound mono or 20 to 60-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon. Grab a couple Plano 3700 pro-latch storage boxes and fill them with basic terminal tackle to cover everything from livelining to chunking, including Gamakatsu or Owner Octopus and Baitholder hooks size #8 to 8/0, 75-pound barrel swivels, 50-pound TA Clips, bobber floats, and bank and egg sinkers from ½-ounce to 4 ounces. There are countless options when it comes to artificial lures to throw, but I usually pack lures that will cover popping, plugging and jigging including Bomber A-Salts, 1 to 2-ounce Crippled Herring and Williamson Gomoku jigs, Storm paddletail shads, 3/8 to 2-ounce white or chartreuse bucktails, Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows, Creek Chub and Tactical Angler poppers, ¼ to 1-ounce Kalin’s leadheads to tip with Berkley Gulp! New Penny Shrimp, Swimmin’ Minnows or soft rubber baits 4 to 5-3/4 inch Bass Assassins and Fin-S fish. Finally, for my travel weapon of choice, I’ve tested and believe in a St. Croix, TIS70MHF3 7-foot three-piece travel rod rated 10 to 20-pound, matched with a Shimano Stradic 5000 reel, spooled with 30-pound Power Pro braid. Phew! That’s a lot of info there, but believe It or not, it’s a basic rundown on what to bring to battle any Florida fish you may come across. You never want to be underprepared when breaking away for a few hours from the resort to wet a line. This checklist should be a good jumping off point this winter to get any traveling angler heading to Florida in the game.[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1481575364874-c0457290301f0e28ae00ce7bbe9ebdf2-3' include='3518,3520'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]

        • Just as striper fishing in the northeast is on fire, the redfish are also on the chew down on the bayou. Nick Honachefsky shares his recent trip down to Mississippi targeting slot sized redfish.

[vc_row][vc_column width='1/1']Myriad redfish haunts exist in the Southeast and Gulf – Florida’s Mosquito Lagoon, Houma, Louisiana and other hot redfish locales, but just last week I was grateful to experience another hot spot for some down home Mississippi redfish in the backwater bayous. Red drum fishing isn’t as stealth as bonefishing or as intricate as snook fishing, but there are certain tricks of the trade that put you over the edge to land some solid golden bronze redfish to fill the cooler with or to simply get a sick tussle on spinning gear.Captain Sonny Schindler of Shore Thing charters www.shorethingcharters.com out of the Bay St. Louis Mississippi proper showed me the way. “We can get redfish up down and below,” says Schindler. “When redfish are feeding on the bottom, we throw 4-inch Electric Chicken Bull Minnow, Bass Assassins, or Fin-S fish lanced on a 3/8 to ¾-ounce Kalins Leadhead, or Strike King spinnerbaits fixed with gold blades. On top, clack float, popping cork rigs such as the Cajun Thunder rig, with a 30-inch 40-pound leader tied to a 3/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook lanced with a live cockahoe minnow (killifish for northern guys) will work.” On our trip, Schindler even cast the ridiculous looking, yet provable Savage Gear 3D suicide duck lure. Plop a soft plastic along the marsh reed banks sightcasting redfish, or to garner an aggressive strike with clack floats if they are biting slow, “Let the leadhead sink to the bottom twitch-jerking it back, or reel in a spinnerbait at a moderate pace.” said Schindler. “When thing are slow, pop the clack float to garner a reactive attention strike. They can’t resist the commotion.” Delving back into the creek channels and canal waterways, you can also opt to cast and swimming plugs such as the Bomber 16 long A, Rapala XRap Long Cast or a Yo-Yuri Crystal Minnow. Generally a medium or medium heavy power 7-foot spinning rod matched with a Shimano ST4000XGFK Stradic reel, spooled with 30-pound Power Pro braid will tackle any situation. Our days out in the Biloxi marsh banks landed us dozens of reds from 16 to 34 inches, making for an incredible Cajun feast. Keep your drags tight to muscle the redfish off the banks, and buckle down for a solid fight.[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width='6' grid_id='vc_gid:1480686348213-ed6a358d21606cfa282376e597773828-5' include='3469,3470'][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][block_title style='column_title' inner_style='inline_border' title='Gear Used'][/block_title][vc_row_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width='1/4'][vc_column_text]
